Elephant Trunk (IC1396)

This was shot mostly in light-polluted South London during a summer period without astronomical darkness at my latitude. I used the best 24hrs 30mins of exposures collected over 14 nights. It’s my fourth attempt at this target, as I’ve never been happy with the result before.

This image was nominated as a ‘Top Pick’ on the Astrobin site.

Total exposure 24h 30m, Ha 105x300, OIII 90x300, Ha 105x300

Whilst taking this image, I was just about to pack up the telescope at 3.30am when Jupiter appeared, chasing the crescent Moon across the dawn horizon. An unexpected moment of beauty.
